Trainings/Educational Sessions
A parliamentarian can coach a presiding officer on effective meeting leadership and rule applications, or offer workshops on a range of topics—from basic meeting procedures to board best practices and advanced parliamentary or governance training.
Board Meeting/Annual Meeting/Convention Parliamentarian
A parliamentarian’s role is to guide an organization’s presiding officer in applying procedural rules correctly during meetings. This responsibility involves extensive pre-meeting consultation and often includes preparing a script.
Committee Consultant
As a parliamentary committee consultant, I provide expert guidance to ensure that committee proceedings are conducted efficiently, fairly, and in accordance with the organization’s governing rules. Those services may include procedural guidance, meeting preparation, bylaws and rules interpretation, drafting and editing, training and coaching, and conflict resolution.
Professional Presiding Officer
A professional presiding officer is an experienced parliamentarian who temporarily steps in for a group’s regular presider when an impartial expert is needed. This may occur when deep divisions exist within the organization or when handling complex matters like bylaws revisions or disciplinary proceedings. Some organizations, such as homeowners associations, regularly employ a professional presiding officer for their annual meetings.
Parliamentary Opinion
A parliamentarian can draft a professional opinion letter or memorandum analyzing and interpreting the governing rules to address specific procedural issues.
Floor Parliamentarian
A floor parliamentarian may be engaged by an individual member or, more commonly, a group of members for guidance on effectively using the rules to achieve their goals during a meeting.
Bylaws Consultant/Revision
A parliamentarian can review bylaws to identify inconsistencies, ambiguities, or deviations from best practices and draft amendments to address them. They can also assist a bylaws committee or others in drafting amendments, a revision, or original bylaws to achieve the desired objectives.
Expert Witness
In cases involving parliamentary procedures, a parliamentarian can evaluate issues, consult with attorneys, and serve as an expert witness. Typically, an attorney hires a parliamentarian as a consultant for an independent assessment, which may influence litigation decisions and remain undiscoverable. If the findings support the client’s position, the attorney may then retain the parliamentarian as an expert witness to provide an affidavit or testify in court.
